Yoga
Yoga, though it started some 5000 years ago in India, has suddenly become so hot all over the world. Sport stars and celebrities practice it, medical patients and health professionals to big businessmen, everyone seem to know about yoga these days. Yoga is basically a form of exercise which brings body and mind together. It is a form of practice which give more importance to the power of imagination and mental power than muscular strength. Yoga is usually practiced in a well ventilated room or in an open field where there are minimal disturbances from people and other city noises. Yoga mats are often used during the practice and you can find many exercise mats specially designed for yoga practices if you look for them.
You might have heard about many high profile Hollywood celebrities traveling all the way to India to meet the Yogis out there. Such is the popularity of Yoga in today’s world. Yoga is believed to transform mental stress to calmness of mind. In their words they say that it converts distress to de-stress. Studies shows that 15 million Americans include some form of yoga in their fitness regimen and 75% of all U.S. health clubs offer yoga classes. You might have heard about testimonials like “I quit smoking”, “I lost weight”, “I am able to overcome mental stress”, “My body ache is gone permanently”, and so on. These testimonials obviously explain the status Yoga gets in today’s world.
But is Yoga a science? Can it cure all our diseases? The answer still lies in your own belief. But there are many cases where Yoga proved to be surprisingly effective in curing some otherwise difficult to cure diseases. Studies have shown that a regimen of aerobic exercise and stress reduction like yoga, combined with a low-fat vegetarian diet, stabilized and in some cases reversed arterial blockage. If you meet these people, you will find that they have embraced Yoga almost like a religion. Such is their belief in it.
Yoga has spread to almost all countries of the world today. The practice which remained like a culture to few Gurus in the Himalayas some years back, now has become one of the most sought after body and mental exercise around the world. In the United States, the story started when the Beatles and Mia Farrow journeyed to India to sit at the feet of the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi in 1968. Slowly though, it started to get more and more popular among the Americans and thus became well known to all the people around the globe.
